Financial Data

OVERVIEW

ROLE

The Office of Financial Research (OFR) within the U.S. Treasury Department was created by the Dodd Frank Act in the wake of the financial crisis in 2008. OFR promotes financial stability by looking across the financial system to measure and analyze risks, perform essential research, and collect and standardize financial data.
As a product designer, my role was to design and develop a series of interactive dashboards surfacing comprehensive and complex financial data that would be more accessible to outside audiences reporting on OFR’s work and impact on policy-making. A working sample dashboard can be seen here.

The process

Since I was working within the confines of an existing site, my task was not so much wireframing a new page architecture, but principally to format the data nto a more usable format.
I began by segmenting the views into something that could be displayed on a single screen with a limited amount of colors to avoid confusion and keep the data down to a manageable view. I did that by setting up a series of tabs, dividing the data by year and category. I also gave the user the ability to download the entire data set if they wished to analyze the full set of data at once.
The resulting dashboard presents the user with a much more comprehensible view of the data, but also having the option of viewing the entire data set.
